Illuminating Design through the Eyes of Andrea Larsson
Andrea Larsson, a self-taught designer born in Copenhagen in 1972 with a background in interior design and fashion, undertook the bold initiative of co-founding Reflections Copenhagen in 2015. Her overarching intention was to birth something unorthodox, harnessing the interplay of reflections cast by natural light. Drawing inspiration from Larsson's personal observations, photographs, and numerous sketches, the venture embarked on a creative journey to craft products that tantalize the senses.
The designs emanating from Reflections Copenhagen defy easy categorization within the framework of typical Scandinavian design. Nevertheless, Larsson discerns a fundamental expression in the aesthetics that emanate from a robust tradition and set of beliefs in design and architecture, imbibed from early teachings. These aesthetics, marked by graphic lines and simplicity, are intrinsic to the Scandinavian design ethos. Larsson's penchant for colors and shapes, coupled with an eagerness to blend these elements with influences from past design eras, underscores her commitment to infusing a modern sensibility into her creations.
At the heart of Larsson's philosophy lies a profound reverence for earlier design eras, harmoniously fused with a clear contemporary expression. Central to her ethos is the belief that recipients of her designs should play an active role, engaging with the products to create their unique universe surrounding each piece. Drawing parallels to realms such as art, music, and fashion, Larsson contends that Reflections Copenhagen's products are designed to evoke a profound and distinctive emotional response.
Northern Radiance: Sculpting Light and Emotion with Scandinavian-inspired Crystal Designs
The designs, anchored in the unique interplay of Scandinavian skies and light, serve as a testament to the profound influence of the northern environment. Crystal, carefully chosen as the medium, amplifies the reflections of light, casting forth vibrant and enchanting colors that captivate the beholder, inviting them into a realm where art, design, and emotion converge.
We met with Andrea Larsson to gain some more insight of Reflections Copenhagen.
Can you share with us the origin story of Reflections Copenhagen?
“The brand was founded in 2014 by me, Andrea Larsson. With a great passion for art and decoration, but also the urge to innovate, to push the boundaries within the field of decorative luxury objects. I draw my inspiration from all that surrounds me, grasping even the slightest details amd quite spontaneously transforms it into my designs of crystal objects. I have a special attraction to Art Deco, Bauhaus and vintage aesthetics, colourful universes and hypnotic forms that exist to amaze.”
How would you describe Reflections Copenhagen's design philosophy, and how has it evolved over the years?
“I want to combine the best materials and a one-of-a-kind handmade production technique. Our products are jewels that do not age and can be passed down from generation to generation. I wish to break the boundaries between interior design and fashion.”
What role does Danish culture, tradition, and nature play in Reflections Copenhagen's design process and the aesthetics of Reflections Copenhagen's products?
“With the designs, I work with the light reflections. We don´t have the same light and sun in Denmark and the countries surrounding us, so it's essential to invite the light into our homes through large windows and glass doors. The crystal and mirrors I work with reflect the light in an exciting and playful way, and I love the fact that it can change the room, the mood and the feeling of a room. When the light is reflected through the crystal, it creates something new and exciting, waking new emotions. Each design offers a vivid interplay of coloured light reflectionsand shadows.”
What are some unique or unconventional materials or techniques you have experimented with in your designs, and how have they influenced your work?
“I always try to push the boundaries and the possibilities the materials give me. The Crystal as a material keeps surprising me, actually, and this enables me to evolve as a designer. The more I learn about the techniques, whether it's Glass, porcelain or mirror, the more I can push the limits.”
If you could collaborate with any artist, designer, or creative mind, who would it be and what kind of project would you work on together?
“There are so many talented designers and artists, and I'm not able to choose. However, former Italian designer Ettore Sottsass I love. The colour combinations and the style is daring and amazing and very inspiring.”
Sustainability has become a crucial aspect of modern design. How does Reflections Copenhagen incorporate environmentally friendly practices into its production processes and design choices?
“We take a zero-waste approach by providinga selection of products in our outlet section that have incurred damage or breakage. We sell everything, and if not sold, I use materials for art projects, sculptures, tests etc. I am very aware of this and feel obligated not to overproduce. Reflections Copenhagen focuses on producing consciously, which is why each piece is crafted to last for generations.”
